History

Canturf (Canberra Turf) turf is a family business that started production in 1966 by the growing of several small experimental lawn plots near Bungendore totalling approximately 1/4 of an acre. These turf plots were successful and soon after 3 acres were sown down. The first turf was harvested and sold in November 1968. Thus Canturf is the earliest surviving turf farm in Australia. With the Queens visit in 1970 Canturf was contracted to supply turf for the War Memorial and other government sectors. This cemented Canturf as the preferred turf supplier for the ACT.

During the seventies Canturf established itself throughout the Canberra, Cooma and Southern Highland areas. Canturf joined the American Sod Producers association in 1972 as the second international member and in the same year imported its first sod harvester from Canada. During the eighties Canturf developed its business within the housing and commercial areas of Canberra while completing some high profile jobs including the National Library, National Gallery and the new Parliament House. As the Canberra ‘Garden City’ grew so did the demand for turf. During the nineties Canturf developed turf pivot farming techniques from USA and Canada. The first pivot was installed on the Bungendore farm in 1995 proving to be an efficient way of growing turf. In 2002 Canturf moved its centre of operations to Fyshwick with the purchase of Golden Holm. Employing the same pivot farming techniques, the renamed ‘Nats Farm’ in Fyshwick has become an impressive visual spectacle for anyone driving past.

Over the last four decades Canturf has established itself a firm reputation as a high quality turf producer.
